Starting with the Radeon HD 7000 Series, Radeon graphic hardware is built to support two key technologies:
The DirectX 11.1 API and a new way of designing GPU drivers called "Windows Display Driver Model 1.2 (WDDM 1.2). Together, these technologies enable a range of new features for Windows 8 and supporting software.
1. TARGET-INDEPENDENT RASTERIZATION (DIRECTX 11.1 REQUIRED)
TIR is a new rendering path that enables superior anti-aliasing performance in Direct2D-driven applications. These include the Windows® 8 UI, as well as the market’s variety of graphics-accelerated browsers: Google Chrome, Internet Explorer and Mozilla Firefox. DirectX 11.1 enables this by allowing the GPU to stand in for the processor during the anti-aliasing stage, and the result is a sharper and clearer dynamic interface that better retains ideal performance.
2. NATIVE STEREOSCOPIC 3D (DIRECTX 11.1 REQUIRED)
Now with more than 600 supported titles*, AMD HD3D technology has provided gamers with an immersive gaming experience through stereoscopic 3D depth. Starting with Windows 8, stereoscopic 3D support will be implemented directly in the operating system with a standardized path for support in future games.
Provided a user has a fully 3D-enabled display chain (GPU, driver and display), users will see evidence of this native functionality in the control panel settings.

3. D3D11 VIDEO PLAYBACK IMPROVEMENTS
Today, a game’s video content and its interactive content operate on different DirectX levels. Whereas gameplay might be rendered via DirectX 10 or DirectX 11, videos are frequently rendered with DirectX 9. This mixture of API levels makes it difficult for game developers to efficiently implement both types of content, an issue that will be streamlined by the API unification that DirectX 11.1 provides.
This unification also provides hardware-accelerated video that’s on par with DirectX Video Acceleration (DXVA), the software library that AMD’s App Acceleration technology already uses to deliver the world’s best video playback quality to AMD Radeon™ customers.
One practical implication of these improvements could be the inclusion of more and higher quality video cutscenes in tomorrow’s games. Another implication might be improved video transcode performance, which AMD also offers across its full line of available Radeon™ Graphics products.
In tests conducted by AMD as of 20 July, 2012, the Radeon™ HD 7000 Series obtained the highest HQV 2.0 score* of any tested system. HQV 2.0 is an industry benchmark used to evaluate video playback quality.

AMD is introducing with the Southern Islands chipset their long idle power saving technology. Now the graphics card can turn off most of its functional units of the GPU, when they are unused, leaving only the PCI Express bus and other components active. This as a result, reduce the power consumption from 15W at idle to under 3W in long idle, a power level low enough that ZeroCore Power shuts off the fan as there is no heat generated further saving energy.
ZeroCore Power will put CrossFire™ grapics cards in ZCP when not in use.
AMD HD3D™ is a technology designed to enable stereoscopic 3D support in games, movies and/or photos. Additional hardware (e.g., 3D-enabled panels, 3D-enabled glasses/emitter, Blu-ray 3D drive) and/or software (e.g., Blu-ray 3D discs, 3D middleware, games) are required for the enablement of stereoscopic 3D. AMD PowerTune technology is a very significant leap forward to better ensure that performance is optimized for TDP constrained GPUs. AMD PowerTune technology helps deliver higher performance that is optimized to the thermal limits of the GPU by dynamically adjusting the clock during runtime based on an internally calculated GPU power assessment. AMD PowerTune technology also improves the mechanism to deal with applications that would otherwise exceed the GPU‟s TDP. By dynamically managing the engine clock speeds based on calculations which determine the proximity of the GPU to its TDP limit, AMD PowerTune allows for the GPU to run at higher nominal clock speeds in the high state than otherwise possible. AMD PowerTune technology is very different from existing methods; rather than setting highest state GPU clock speeds based on a worst case TDP approach that can compromise performance in a majority of applications, AMD PowerTune technology can dynamically adjust the performance profile in real time to fit within the TDP envelope.

PCI EXPRESS 3.0
4 years after the introduction of PCI-E 2.0, the all new PCI-E 3.0 specification is now introduced. Providing 1GB/sec per lane bidirectional, which for a X16 device means 16 GB/sec, doubling 8 GB/sec on the previous generation.
FAST HDMI technology
With the introduction of the HD 6000 Series, HDMI 1.4a implementation allows the graphics card to enable Stereo 3D on HDTVs or monitor displays, this same feature is also found on the new HD 7870 royalKnights. Now with the introduction of HDMI support for 4K x 2K displays, the HD 7870 royalKnights is now able to run 4K x 2K displays (max resolution 4096x3112) over HDMI along with being able to support 1080p Stereo 3D at 120fps (60Hz/eye), with the current standard set at 48fps (24Hz/eye).
Multi-Monitor, 21.6 Gbps bandwidth
This graphics card is optimized for AMD Eyefinity™ technology and supports the latest generation of display connectivity.
The graphics card features 2 Mini DisplayPort 1.2 outputs with 21.6 Gbps of bandwidth and high bit rate audio, and features support for by up to six screens simultaneously using AMD Eyefinity™ technology.
